Rehabilitation of Teshie Krobo Basic School
Project Name:
Construction of Toilet Facilities at Roman Catholic Basic School, Ayikuma, Dodowa
Project Category:
Sanitation and Hygiene (UN – SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation for All)
Introduction:
Access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities is a fundamental human right; however, over 2.3 billion people worldwide lack access to basic sanitation services, with devastating effects on their health, education, and economic productivity. This lack of access impacts students’ daily lives attending basic school in Ayikuma, Greater Accra Region. The school lacks adequate toilet facilities, requiring students to use a dangerous, dilapidated toilet or to relieve themselves in the open. This situation poses grave health risks, decreases school attendance, and has an effect on academic performance. To address this critical need, the Rotary Club of Accra Premier International proposes building five toilets for boys and five for girls.
Background:
The school in Ayikuma, Dodowa Greater Accra Region, currently has no safe and adequate toilet facilities, forcing students to either use the dilapidated facility or go in the open. These conditions create a significant health hazard for the students, as well as for the surrounding community. Moreover, the lack of proper sanitation facilities is a barrier to education, as students may miss classes due to illnesses or other complications arising from poor sanitation. Additionally, students who do attend school may have difficulty focusing on their studies, given the discomfort and embarrassment caused by the inadequate facilities. Finally, the lack of safe and hygienic toilets in the school can reduce academic performance, given the resulting absenteeism, loss of classroom time, and general distraction.
